This paper is an ethnographic research paper, which offers an orientation to understanding the process and structure of a social setting.  One way to develop sensitivity to communication is to observe interaction in a systematic way.  Choose ONE of the following theories and ONE of the corresponding observable phenomenons.

1.      SOCIAL PENETRATION.  Using the constructs derived from the theory critically analyze one or two clips form any movie.  Papers on the movies Swingers, When Harry Met Sally, Beauty and the Beast and Shrek will not be accepted.

2.      EXPECTANCY VIOLATION THEORY. Pick a coffee shop, restaurant, pub, bar, library, residence or C-train car and watch the nonverbal conversation occurring. Based on the theory, what are your conclusions about the relationships and characteristics of the people you have chosen to observe? (You can include gestures as well).

3.      TECHNOLOGICAL DETERMINISM.  Using the theoretical constructs, follow the topics religion, shopping, games or social relationships as determined by the four epochs identified by McLuhan.
